When Should You Get Your Moles Checked

As you read below, you will find that keeping track of your moles and which ones to watch out for, will enlighten you to the fact that moles are common, but some are dangerous.

We all get that ugly little mole somewhere on the body. But the question is, when should you get them checked? There are various types of moles and some are even considered a beauty mark if right above your lip. The answer is easy, keep an eye on all of them. I'm not saying if you are covered with moles, you need a magnifying glass, but just keep abreast of them and know which ones may be starting to change. Easy process, a little time consuming if you are one that has tons of moles, but Life Saving, so isn't your life worth taking a few minutes?

I've had a few removed, and have been scared out of my wits from the way they looked. The matter of fact is that I actually have to get 3 more removed next week. One is frightening looking and has actually changed shape and color in the last 3 weeks. I'll let you know about that one.

What Moles Are Suspicious

I write a lot of my articles on health issues, because I've kinda been there, done that. So, if I can help someone else out and it can either give you some hope, or hopefully not scare you death, that's what God seems to be telling me to do. They may not be the greatest hubs, or high scored, and honestly, I really don't care. I just want to try and help someone out if I can.

Back to the mole thing. If you have a mole, and it seems to be larger than a pencil eraser, or has changed shape, color or is raised, has any blue tint to it, or anything suspicious, have it looked at as soon as you can with your dermatologist. Moles can turn into Melanoma, but skin cancer is the easiest to cure if treated early. Early detection is the key issue.

I've had a few in places that I've had to have removed that I would never think to look. I think you have the picture. There is a rule of checking your moles. It's easy to remember. It's called the ABCDE's.

Checking your moles using the ABCDE System

  • A stands for asymmetry (one half of the mole doesn't match the other
  • B stands for border (where the edges are ragged or irregular
  • C stands for color (has shades of red, white, tan, brown or black or blue)
  • D stands for diameter (larger than a pencil eraser)
  • E stands for evolving (starting to change shape or color)

Early Detection Is The Key To A Cure For Melanoma

Let's say you do find a suspicious looking mole and it's in it's very early stages of melanoma. Melanoma is 100 % curable if detected very early, so why not get them checked? Please also remember, that moles can be anywhere on your body. I do mean anywhere. You need to make sure and look where the sun doesn't shine also. I have had a few removed, so I know it is possible. Also, if melanoma is a family trait, it's even more important to get them checked. If you have a high number of moles on your body, it may take longer, but it's worth taking the time to keep on eye on any of them that are changing. There are free cancer screenings usually once or twice or a year in your area or close by. It's always worth going to if you can't afford going to the Dr. However; if a you notice a mole changing that looks worrisome and you don't have insurance, you can always call the office to see if they offer charity assistance or financial needs assistance. There ARE ways and you need to dig into them all.

Changes In Moles And How To Keep Track Of Them

Tracking your moles is easy and could mean saving your life. Take a few notes and here is how you can do that.

If you have a mole that you think is becoming suspicious, take a picture of it. Then, if you think its starting to change, revert back to that picture and see what the changes are. Don't forget to write a date on the first picture though. This way you can see how long it's been that the changes started to take place. Maybe write a little diary if maybe you are prone to moles. Or keep a notebook handy. Ladies- for the impossible man in your life, good luck getting them to check anything on themselves. They are not exempt from this disease at all. In fact, they are just as apt to get skin cancer as anyone else. If they won't take the time or the interest, then you might let them read this story, or anywhere on the web for that matter. My father had 3 removed that were cancerous and I know a lot of men that have had them removed.

The key to skin cancer, is it is almost 100 % curable if caught early!! What more do you want?

I have some links here you can get better information than what I provided, but I just thought maybe if I can pass on some support or anything at all, I'm willing to do that.

Very informative ! Welcome to hubpages . I was given advice by my plastic surgeon ( basal cell carcinoma) wear sun block ( not sun screen ) daily , reapply often . Wear a wide brim hat ( not a baseball type hat) Keep out of the sun 11 am to 4 pm if possible .

thanks again for your comment. Just hoping to help someone out there. I never realized the seriousness of these moles until my friend was diagnosed with melanoma.
